Former World Champion Jacques Villeneuve is hoping to return to Formula 1 with his own team. The 39-year-old from Canada was close to a race comeback in with Stefan GP this year although the team was eventually not granted a license to join the grid.

According to German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, Villeneuve has applied for a place on the grid with 'Villeneuve Racing', with as many as eight other teams wishing to join the sport in 2011.

Formula 1 currently counts a total of 12 teams, but is hoping to welcome team number 13 for next season. A thirteenth team is expected to be announced later this month.
