Virgin Racing’s Nick Wirth believes that the team are now significantly closer to fellow 2010 debutants Lotus following a significant upgrade for Silverstone. With the Sheffield-based outfit now closer to their main rivals, the Technical Director predicts a far closer second half to the season.
So far this year, Lotus have held at edge amongst the three new teams although Wirth – whose car is solely CFD-designed – is confident that the latest increase in performance will allow Virgin to fight with Lotus on a regular basis.
“It’s pretty clear from fastest laps, where we were, the race-long battle that the three of them (Trulli, Kovalainen and Glock) had, that we’ve made a big step forward this weekend away from HRT and right into the thick of the Lotuses,” he told online magazine GP Week at Silverstone.
“Lotus have worked very hard updating their car on a more consistent basis. We’ve waited for a long time and then done a big update and it’s pretty clear, going forward for the next Grands Prix, that it’s going to be a pretty epic battle between us and them towards the end of the year and we’re going to be pushing very hard to carry on bringing parts to the track.”
