Vettel: Always a certain distance between team-mates

20 July 2010

Sebastian Vettel has provided another hint that tensions are mounting between himself and Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber by seemingly explaining how the pair are working in harmony on a professional basis only.

Media pressure has been mounting on Red Bull for several races, compounded by moments such as the team-mates’ collision in Istanbul and the nose cone debate at Silverstone, with Vettel having shared his latest views with German newspaper Spiegel.

“Everyone looks to benefit himself,” he said. “The prime focus is on the team. A racing driver himself usually sees things in a very stubborn way and this case is no different; at the end of the day, the one who is ahead in the pecking order is the fastest one.

“Your team-mate is always the first person you want to beat because the same machinery is available, but there’s always a certain distance.

"We work together where we must work together, to promote the team and develop the car. Otherwise, everyone is focussed on themself and hopes to seek their own advantages.”
