Ferrari Team Principal Stefano Domenicali believes he has developed an answer in order to avoid situations the like of which Ferrari was involved at Silverstone. With Fernando Alonso having been penalised for passing Robert Kubica by cutting a corner, the Italian believes such circumstances can be avoided by a simple rule amendment.
Following the British Grand Prix, FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting explained that the Scuderia was advised to hand the place back to the Renault driver on no less than three occasions. However, the team responded in the Italian press by giving a minute-by-minute account of on-track positions and radio communications with the FIA.
“Each episode has its beginning and you can’t make a decision automatically,” Domenicali explained to Italy’s La Stampa. “We asked about the situation and waited for a response but the scenario then changed.”
Stefano’s last comments refer to the speed at which Kubica’s Renault, which soon retired from the race, dropped back behind the Ferrari as two more cars then passed the Pole, meaning it was – by that point – impossible for Alonso to yield. Having seen this, Domenicali announced his idea.
“The case was not so unique,” he continued. “We will discuss an amendment to regulation: if the race stewards are not involved within three or four corners of the incident, the manoeuvre should be considered okay.”
