Bottas aiming for 2012 F1 race seat

20 July 2010

Williams test driver Valtteri Bottas believes that he should be able to make a Formula 1 race debut by no later than 2012. The Finn, who has won the last two prestigious Masters of Formula 3 events at Zandvoort, joined Sir Frank’s team at the start of the year.

Since the departure of Kimi Räikkönen at the end of 2009, Finland has been left with a single F1 representative in Heikki Kovalainen although Bottas is confident that he can join the line-up in less than two years’ time.

“I believe that I could be a race driver in 2012,” he told national newspaper Turun Sanomat. “Williams is unlikely to change its driver again next season but the situation may be different in 2012.”

The 20-year-old’s hopes could rest on the retirement of Rubens Barrichello who, having joined F1 in 1993, will contest his 300th Grand Prix before the summer is out.
