Jacques Villeneuve has responded to speculation across the internet by clarifying his current plans to enter a Formula 1 team, Villeneuve Racing, in 2011. The 1997 World Champion is applying to governing body the FIA alongside GP2 outfit Durango although the French-Canadian is unwilling to disclose much detail at present.
So far, some word has linked the former title winner to the son of Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi, leader of Libya since 1969, as a possible investor.
With various hearsay having built up of late, Villeneuve – who will be busy contesting the Brickyard 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Indianapolis this week – published the following statement on his personal website on Tuesday:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
‘There are a number of rumours circulating at the moment and I wanted to clarify a few things before this gets out of hand.
The team will be a joint venture with Durango, and based out of Italy. To be clear, right now all the money comes from corporate sponsorship, and not from personal investors.
I'd like to thank my fans for the continued support they give to me - as always, it is greatly appreciated.’
