Ferrari not out of the running, says Whitmarsh

22 July 2010

Despite admitting that he would prefer McLaren to be fighting against only Red Bull for this year’s titles, Martin Whitmarsh is adamant that Ferrari must not be ruled out of contention at present, notwithstanding the Italian team’s recent poor form.

Heading into Germany, Ferrari’s 185 points to McLaren’s 278 confirms that the Scuderia, which last enjoyed constructors’ honours in 2008, sits a large 93 points behind the Woking squad, which is yet to win the teams’ title since 1998.

“I'd love to believe that but experience has told me that you can't write them off,” Whitmarsh, asked if the contest is now a two-horse race, said during the Vodafone phone-in.

“The fact is that Ferrari are a strong team; they're technically capable, have fantastic resources, they've got one former World Champion and one other top-flight driver.

“Mercedes-Benz, similarly, have one former multiple World Champion and a very good driver in Nico (Rosberg), so I think it's too early to write them off.”

For now, the McLaren Team Principal insists that flat-out work must continue in order to retain their stranglehold at the top of the table. “We need to try to improve our car and do as good a job as we can do,” he began to sum up. “Red Bull, clearly, are the principle challenge at the moment but I don't dismiss the others either.”
