Alonso poised for two critical races

22 July 2010

The upcoming pair of back-to-back races will involve teams travelling directly towards Hungary almost immediately after this weekend’s German Grand Prix finishes. For Fernando Alonso, the happenings of Hockenheim and the Hungaroring are likely to be make-or-break for the World Championship.

Ferrari have lost significant ground over the course of recent races, with Felipe Massa having failed to score for three successive Grands Prix and Alonso left furious by stewards’ decisions in both Valencia and Silverstone. However, the Spaniard’s chin remains up as Germany looms.

“We’re about to begin a very important period for our season; at the next two races, in Germany and Hungary, it will be crucial to pick up a lot of points to stay in the race for the title,” he said. “There’s no point in looking back and crying about it - we know that we will have to get everything right, then we will bring home the results that we want, I have no doubt about that.

“I want to stress that my continued confidence isn’t unfounded but it’s based on fact. Our car has noticeably improved in recent weeks, as we even showed at Silverstone - a track that should have theoretically been hard for us. This year’s points system increases the value of the gaps but, at the same time, it allows you to make important gains.”

With 25 points on offer for a win, Alonso is currently 47 off Lewis Hamilton’s championship lead

Furthermore, Fernando added that – with Hockenheim being one of the season’s shortest circuits – margins between lap times will generally be smaller and he also holds much confidence in the latest updated components of his car.

“At Hockenheim we will have more new parts on the F10, in particular a new version of the diffuser,” he explained. "In Friday free practice we’ll see if it brings the effects we hope for but I’m very confident, given that all the new parts we’ve introduced recently have worked as expected.”
