Hamilton crashes in Free Practice 1

23 July 2010

World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton’s German Grand Prix weekend has started in the worst possible way, with a crash in Friday morning practice at Hockenheim.

The session began in soaking conditions at 10am local time although a drying track and constantly changing conditions resulted in several off-track moments and spins from various cars.

Hamilton’s shunt came with 20 minutes of the 90-minute period remaining, over-correcting a slide at Turn 4 before hitting the tyre barriers, damaging both front wheels plus the left-rear as the car span round.

The wet conditions are bad news for in general for McLaren, who had hoped to test their blown diffuser in dry conditions after abandoning usage of the system on Friday at Silverstone.
