Lotus have verified that it was a fuel pump problem which grounded Jarno Trulli in the final five minutes of German Grand Prix practice on Friday afternoon. Apart from the issue, the day also saw the two Virgin Racing cars each move ahead of one Lotus.
With Timo Glock leading the way amongst Formula 1’s three new teams, a significant gap of half a second was seen back to Trulli as Lucas di Grass demoted the second Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen to 22nd place.
“A useful day for us, with no real problems with either car,” explained Lotus’ Chief Technical Officer Mike Gascoyne. “Jarno’s final run was brought to an early end with a small problem with his fuel pump, but apart from that it was a trouble-free session.
“Fairuz (Fauzy, reserve driver) did an excellent job this morning in the wet session, running well on both the full Wets and the Inters; considering the limited running he’s had in the car, he should be very pleased with his day’s work.
“In the afternoon we were able to work on the dry setup and I think we found a clear direction towards the end of the session and there’s definitely more performance to come tomorrow.”
