Alonso relieved and surprised with qualifying

24 July 2010

Fernando Alonso’s German Grand Prix qualifying position marks the first time the Spaniard has started on the front row in 2010. Having missed out on pole by just two thousandths of a second, the Spaniard will challenge Sebastian Vettel on Sunday’s run to Turn 1.

Alonso and Ferrari have been quick all weekend at Hockenheim so far, be it rain or shine, although the former double World Champion – who won in Germany for Renault in 2005 – has described this and next weekend in Hungary as ‘crucial’ for his title attack.

“We have to be happy,” he commented in Saturday’s press conference. “We’re on the first row for the first time this season, so that’s definitely a step forward for us and we’re been competitive all weekend, I'm very confident with the car.

“We’ve now finally had a perfect Saturday; obviously we missed pole by a small margin but the points come tomorrow, not Saturday, so we need to stay focused for tomorrow.

“We are surprised to be so close and finally fighting for a pole position after ten races; it took a bit longer than expected but we’re now very close.”
