Lewis Hamilton was in a philosophical mood following German Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday, as he and team-mate Jenson Button could manage no more than the fifth and sixth best grid slots behind the leading Red Bull and Ferrari cars.
With all cars carrying low fuel levels in qualifying – a perfect marker for raw pace – Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel managed a best effort of 1:13.791 for pole position although the leading McLaren of Button was some seven tenths of a second slower, with Hamilton a further tenth in arrears and out-qualified by his team-mate for the fourth time.
“It's what I've been telling you for a long, long time and no-one believed it,” a rational Lewis, who crashed on Friday, told reporters in the paddock. “We are the third team at the moment and just not fast enough but we keep pushing and we do the best job we can.
“I never expect to be sixth, for sure, but I've been saying for a long time that, generally, we are the third fastest team and the two teams in front did a better job today.
“My lap wasn't fantastic, either, but that's the way it is; my qualifying pace was quite poor, to be honest…I don't think it was great but I did the best job I could do.”
