Much disappointment at Virgin after qualifying

24 July 2010

All at Virgin Racing were left downcast in the aftermath of German Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday, with lead car Timo Glock some eighth tenths of a second down on the quickest Lotus time despite being ahead in practice.

2010 debutant Virgin’s first problems in qualifying came as Lucas di Grassi was forced to watch most of Q1 from the pit wall due to gearbox problems; he starts 24th and last, with Glock having suffered similar issues in practice.

“It has been a very frustrating day for me and the team because we were looking so good in free practice and I think we could have done a really good job in qualifying,” said the Brazilian.

“But we had the alternator problem late in the session this morning and then it was clear on my qualifying out-lap that there was a gearbox problem which could not be fixed in the time we had.”

“A very disappointing day after the promising start we made to the weekend yesterday,” added Glock, who is one of six Germans at his home race. “After the first set of tyres we were in front of Lotus but we couldn’t continue and therefore run the next set of Options (Super Soft compound), so we don’t know how it could have panned out.

“We could have split the Lotus cars or even been ahead of them - it’s just very disappointing.”
