Felipe Massa was a clearly downcast Brazilian in the post-German Grand Prix press conference on Sunday afternoon, having yielded race victory to Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso at the Hockenheimring on the first anniversary of his life-threatening accident in Budapest.
With Massa shooting past both Alonso and pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel to snatch the lead around the outside of the first corner, the Paulista remained in front after the sole pit-stops until receiving the following radio message from Race Engineer Rob Smedley: “Fernando-is-faster-than-you ; can you confirm that message?”
When told during the FIA press conference that the day marked exactly one year since the terrifying Hungaroring moment, that enjoying victory today would have been an ideal situation and that the pass looked clear to all onlookers, Felipe replied:
“Well, I think so…the start was just fantastic and the pace on the soft tyres was great; I was struggling a bit on the Hard but, anyway, it was a very good race for us.”
Felipe was then questioned on the Lap 49 overtake, which took place upon exiting the Turn 6 hairpin. “Well, I don’t think I need to say anything about that….he passed me,” a clearly saddened Felipe continued, then answering “Yes” when told that Smedley had apologised.
“The only thing I feel is that we won for the team - we did a great job for the team and that’s the most important thing. We were pushing hard, this was a very, very good track for us but, anyway, we did a good job with work inside the car and it’s getting faster race by race
“When you see your car is very competitive, the best you can do is get first and second at the track. As a team, we’ve achieved the maximum possible from this race.”
