Formula 1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone believes there is no room in the sport for a ban on team orders, with Ferrari’s tactics in the German Grand Prix having resulted in a $100,000 fine from governing body the FIA.
Clear acts of teams which are considered to have artificially determined an outcome of a race have been officially outlawed in the sporting regulations since 2003, following the public outrage caused by Ferrari’s place swap at the end of the previous season’s Austrian Grand Prix.
However, FOM’s Ecclestone is sure that all teams make use of orders between drivers to some extent and therefore believes a regulation banning such actions is not appropriate.
“I must confess that I would agree with anyone who thinks that,” he explained to reporters. “I believe that what people do when they are inside the team and how they run their team is up to them.”
Bernie then responded to questions asking if a scrapping of the rule should be put into place “I don’t know, we’ll have to see,” he replied. “It’s something that needs to be discussed but, as far as I’m concerned, a team is a team and they should run it whichever way they want to run it.”
