Organisers of the returning American Grand Prix have revealed the plot of land on which the Austin, Texas race will be run when it makes its debut on the calendar in 2012. They have also confirmed that a former NFL and NBA team owner will be a significant player in the scheme.
The American Grand Prix has been off the Formula 1 calendar since the end of the 2007 season, a year in which Lewis Hamilton led home McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso to a convincing 1-2 result at Indianapolis.
However, as revealed by race promoter Tavo Hellmund on Tuesday, the 2012 event will take place on a site previously known in the area as Wandering Creek.
“As many Americans know, Austin has earned a reputation as one of the 'it' cities in the United States,” he said. “Austin features that rare combination of ideal geographic location and beauty.”
It has also been confirmed that Texan Red McCombs, a former owner of NFL (National Football League) team Minnesota Vikings plus NBA (National Basketball Association) squads San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets – as well as being rated by Forbes magazine as one of the wealthiest people in the country – has been introduced as a key backer in the project.
“Bringing Formula 1 back to the United States represents the opportunity of a lifetime and one that any city in the world would want,” he commented via a statement. “The size and scope of an F1 event is comparable to hosting a Super Bowl and will bring substantial economic benefit to Austin, San Antonio and the entire state of Texas.”
