Heidfeld tipped as Pirelli tyre tester

29 July 2010

It has emerged that Pirelli, which joins Formula 1 as the sport’s sole tyre supplier from 2011 onwards, is considering an imminent testing role for Nick Heidfeld which would involve taking to the track in a 2009 car.

Heidfeld moved to Mercedes as test and reserve driver for this season, having lost a chance for a race seat when Michael Schumacher made his return to the sport.

However, it is now being reported by Germany’s Auto Bild that the former BMW man could run several tests for tyres – should it be permitted – this year.

“Before the last race in Abu Dhabi, we will complete six tests with a 2009 Formula 1 car,” explained Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembury.

“This would require an extremely experienced, but also fit driver, who after 500 kilometres of testing can continue to be consistent; Nick Heidfeld meets these criteria very closely and would therefore be the ideal candidate.”
