Eddie Irvine has said that he would not be wishing to volunteer as an FIA race steward without confirmation that he would have a great influence over on-track incidents, bearing in mind previous decisions with which the Ulsterman has disagreed.
Irvine retired from Formula 1 after losing his Jaguar seat and not being selected for a place at Jordan prior to 2003. However, the 1999 World Championship runner-up for Ferrari continues to be a keen follower of the sport despite admitting that some aspects annoy him.
“Only if I could call the shots, 100 percent,” he told F1 Racing magazine when asked if he would be interested in acting as a steward under the FIA’s new-for-2010 scheme.
“I'm not going to sit down and have a discussion with a load of people I don't know about whether someone should be done. I totally disagree with what happened to Lewis (Hamilton) at Spa in 2008. I can't be bothered having arguments about stuff that doesn't make any difference to me.”
Eddie then responded to those who labelled him as more of a ‘playboy’ than racing driver. “Listen, the only one of my team-mates to ever really beat me in Formula 1 was Michael Schumacher,” he said. “Every other one, I out-qualified them mostly. If you look at my time at Jaguar, none of my team-mates there beat me - I don't think I actually got beaten in a race by a team-mate the whole time I was at Jaguar.”
