Felipe Massa has insisted that he will not be playing a permanent supporting role to Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso, after being asked to give way to the Spaniard in last Sunday’s German Grand Prix.
With Massa having led from third on the grid for the first time this year, the Brazilian received a radio message from Race Engineer Rob Smedley and soon after lifted off the throttle upon exiting the Turn 6 hairpin. However, when questioned in Thursday’s FIA press conference at the Hungaroring, the Brazilian remained defiant.
“The time I say I am number two driver, I will not race anymore,” he told the press before replying ‘I will win’ when asked to predict his actions in the event of a similar situation occurring this weekend.
“For sure, I have spoken to everybody inside the team and, as I said, I am not really here to race but to win; that is really my point - I am a professional, I work for the team and everybody has to understand my point.”
Despite being clear with regards to his own interests, though, Felipe reiterated that he is a member of a team.
“We all know how important it is to work for the team,” he went on. “You remember what happened in 2007 and 2008, so I don't think I have to go through all the points but if the team really has a chance to win the championship, I want the best for the team.”
