Rubens Barrichello has expressed his sympathy for close friend and fellow countryman Felipe Massa, who lost the lead of the German Grand Prix on Sunday due to Ferrari team orders – raising various similarities to the situation the Williams driver found himself in at the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix.
At Zeltweg eight years ago, Barrichello was ordered to give way to Michael Schumacher in the final moments of the race, despite having led for the duration of the afternoon. In slightly different circumstances, Massa experienced a comparable state of affairs at Hockenheim.
“All I can say is that I am very sorry for him and to see that he had to go through such a bad thing,” commented Barrichello who, like Massa, was present in the FIA’s Thursday afternoon press conference at the Hungaroring.
“Nobody should have to go through that and experience those feelings - Felipe is a friend and I wish he didn't have to go through it.”
