Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing, having easily set the pace on Friday morning at the Hungaroring, have remained at the top of the timesheets in the afternoon session. However, still under dry conditions, the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso was able to split the two blue cars over another drama-free 90 minutes.
Rain is forecast for Friday night although there were no signs of showers during the day, with the Hungaroring welcoming Formula 1 just five days after the German Grand Prix and with this race marking the last before the three-week summer break.
Ambient temperatures ranged between 23 and 25°C (73-77°F) to ensure a comfortable day of viewing for spectators, although it was a generally quiet day in the stands.
The session was preceded by a track check from FIA technical delegates Charlie Whiting and Herbie Blash, with the GP2 car of Rodolfo González having run wide and kicked up a piece of concrete from the kerb at the final corner. More checks are likely tonight after another portion of rumble strip came lose at Turn 9 in this session.
Although there were no major happenings, the skid marks from Felipe Massa’s Turn 4 crash of last year remain clearly visible and a number of cars went wide at the location today, not least the Sauber of Kamui Kobayashi in both sessions.
The exit of the Turn 6-7 chicane also proved popular for off-track excursions, with Jaime Alguersuari, Massa and Mark Webber all taking the agricultural route and kicking up dust in the process. The Toro Rosso man may also be looked at by the stewards, having skipped the chicane in order to pass the Hispania of Sakon Yamamoto in the final minute.
With Red Bull a comfortable half second up on Ferrari at the sharp end, McLaren continued to struggle as Lewis Hamilton – who flat-spotted his left-front tyre at the second corner – led the way in sixth with team-mate Jenson Button, who could be heard over team radio describing traffic as a ‘nightmare’, only ninth.
There were also problems for Heikki Kovalainen, with Lotus removing his car’s floor in order to deal with hydraulics problems which ensured the Finn – a popular personality in Hungary – managed only five laps.
Force India had hoped to trial their exhaust-blown diffuser efficiently – in place on Adrian Sutil’s car for the first time, plus silver heat-reflective rear brake ducts – although the German remained rooted to the garage for the majority of the period for the second Friday in succession, with both crews hurried working on his VJM03 in the garage.
