Fernando Alonso does not believe that Red Bull Racing are as rapid as they showed in Hungary on Friday. Sebastian Vettel finished the first practice session a full second up on the third-placed Spaniard, who managed second place but was still half a second in arrears later on in the day.
Alonso heads to Hungary fifth in the World Championship and 34 points behind leader Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren and, although he was comfortably ahead of the Englishman on Friday, most at the track believe that keeping in touch with Red Bull could be close to impossible.
“We’re happy but we know Friday means very little, as always,” said Alonso. “We were all trying different things but I’m quite happy.
"We were slower than Red Bull today although we need to also see under which conditions (ie. fuel loads) they were running in comparison to what we were running, so you never know.
“I think we really need to wait for tomorrow; we have seen McLaren with problems on Fridays before but then they’ve always scored lots of points – like at Silverstone, when they struggled a lot but then finished second and fourth.”
