With Heikki Kovalainen 18th in the final moments of Q1, it was Timo Glock’s final effort of 1:24.050 which saw him out-qualify the Lotuses for the third time this year.

It’s a mini celebration, we’re having a great battle with Lotus at the moment and people forget that it’s really, really tight,” Virgin Racing Team Principal John Booth told BBC Sport.

“For sure, they (team personnel) work longer because we have less support at home, but we had a major update at Silverstone, we’re best of the new teams and it seems to be a really positive step.”
