Despite a strong effort, Mark Webber was unable to come close to Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel at the Hungaroring on Saturday, with the latter taking pole position by three and a half tenths of a second.
Nearly a second ahead of Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari, Webber faced no threat from behind although – despite being quickest in Q2 – Vettel proved untouchable in the final phase.
“I did my best,” said Mark. “It was probably not the cleanest lap in the first one but that’s the way it goes. Seb did a good lap but in the end it came down to the lap and it wasn’t my day today.
“The guys have done a phenomenal job, but we’ll see tomorrow. It’s pretty similar to Barcelona here - we knew it was going to be maybe pretty tight between us but whoever did the cleanest lap out of us two was probably going to get pole.”
