McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh has emphasised his belief that Red Bull and even Ferrari are making use of front wings which flex and break the current technical regulations.
Despite the cars in question having successfully passed FIA scrutineering and McLaren not lodging an official protest, Whitmarsh talked again of the subject as McLaren qualified fifth and 11th in Hungary on Saturday whilst Red Bull and Ferrari locked out the front two rows.
“I think, actually, we probably had a couple of tenths (left) there,” he explained to BBC Sport of Lewis Hamilton’s lap. “It would have been nice to get in front of Massa and I think that was doable.
“Overall, I think we’re quickest of the fixed wing vehicles…that’s how we feel at the moment, but obviously we’re not trying hard enough in that area but we’ll see.
“The fact is all wings are flexible but when the regulations require the endplate to be 88 millimetres above the ground but they’re touching the ground, then perhaps it’s a little but too far- maybe it’s time for a clarification about what’s permissible here.”
