Russia’s Vitaly Petrov was thrilled to have led the way for Renault in qualifying as he managed seventh place on the grid for the Hungarian Grand Prix; the achievement marks the first time the 2010 rookie has started ahead of team-mate Robert Kubica.
With Renault have been rapid since Friday morning and therefore poised for a large points haul on Sunday, Petrov – who ran wide at Turn 11 on his final Q3 lap – then took advantage of a Turn 2 mistake by Kubica, who will join him on Row 4.
“I think we did a good job today and I’m very happy to reach Q3 and to be starting seventh ahead of Robert, because you first goal is always to be ahead of your team-mate,” the Vyborg man commented.
“We knew that the car would be quite good here and I have been very happy with the balance over the whole weekend, but the guys in front are still very strong so we know that we need to keep pushing to catch them.
“For the race tomorrow, overtaking will be very difficult and the only real chance is at the start, but I will do my best to try and pass some guys and score some points.”
