Barrichello and Schumacher share opinions

1 August 2010

There was a clear difference of opinion between Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher after the former Ferrari team-mates so nearly were involved in a huge accident at the Hungaroring on Sunday.

After running long into the race, Barrichello’s Williams pitted on Lap 55 of 70. Then on fresh tyres, the Brazilian proceeded to catch the German at a rate of two seconds per lap before making several attempts to pass at Turn 1.

However, it was on the 66th tour when Rubens finally made his way past Michael, with the latter squeezing the former towards the pit wall; thankfully, as the wall ended, Barrichello was able to swerve into the pit lane exit before forcing his way through at the first corner.

“He made a mistake on the last corner and you could see he was just a bit too close,” Barrichello explained to BBC Sport. “You know, we’ve been there before and what we want from racing is just to be fair. He saw me coming and just closed, closed, closed and luckily the wall ended there, so I could go a bit more to the right.

“There’s not a rule for that but between ourselves we should just choose a line and stay on that line…it’s just bringing up a lot of things from the past and after the controversy of last week that’s just not needed.”

When asked by former team boss Eddie Jordan if the move was the most dangerous in which he has been involved, Barrichello replied: “Yes it was. It was the most dangerous thing I’ve ever been through and I’m sorry for that.”

Rubens then saw and heard Schumacher’s view of the incident via a nearby monitor.

“Well there’s not much to say other than that he had fresher tyres,” Michael began. “My exit speed (from the final corner) was a bit compromised. I knew he was coming so, from my point of view, I was moving over to let him know where I was so he could go to the other side, but he obviously decided not to move to the other side. We know certain drivers have certain views...and then there's Rubens.”

Barrichello then responded to the 7-time World Champion’s comments. “It was always my fault for six years, wasn't it?” he smiled. “His view is always that I’m a big crier.”
