Webber delighted with unforeseen win

1 August 2010

Mark Webber did not expect victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix although, despite losing a place and dropping to third at the start, the Australian was able to take advantage of a mistake by his team-mate and post a string of rapid and highly impressive laps.

Starting alongside Red Bull partner Sebastian Vettel on the front row, Webber dropped behind Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari from the dirty side of the grid. However, after staying out when the Safety Car was deployed, Webber proceeded to stretch out over 20 seconds on Alonso whilst on the Super Soft tyre compound.

Vettel, meantime, sunk to third after being handed a drive-through penalty for leaving too much space behind his team-mate at the restart.

“The start was a little tricky on that side, Fernando got a good start and Seb’s pretty good as well,” said the race winner. “I had Lewis there as well but at least got out in third position and then settled in. It was no surprise to see Seb disappearing and Fernando doing his absolute best but I was just waiting for the crucial point of the race to see what would happen.

“Then we had the Safety Car and I had to go off the strategy to try and pass Fernando; we knew we needed about 20 seconds but wanted a buffer to make sure the guys had less pressure in the pit-stop. In the end, I knew that once I had the Primes (harder compound tyres) on these guys would have already done 20 laps and the race would be in the bag.

“It was a little bit of a gift today for me but I haven’t had many of those. An incredible day for the team - we didn’t get the 1-2 we wanted but still a great day.”
