Alonso pleased with ‘good weekend’

1 August 2010

Fernando Alonso made the best of an unfavourable situation on Sunday as, even though Red Bull dominated Saturday’s qualifying session in Hungary, he was able to split Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel on the podium.

After jumping Webber for second off the line, Alonso ran third following the Safety Car restart, with Australian managing to pull out enough of a lead to retain the top spot following his sole stop later in the race.

However, Fernando was forced to defend from Vettel for nearly 40 laps when the German rejoined from a drive-through penalty.

“I think we have some credit still remaining from this year’s bad luck, so I think it was a good race,” the Ferrari driver commented. “The start was superb; we passed Mark, thanks maybe to the clean side. I was side-by-side with Vettel into the first corner - it was very close but I was not able to overtake.

“It was then very stressful in the pits and we were taking care about lots of things to make sure we had no penalties or anything. Mark was very quick and was able to do 40 laps with one set of tyres, which is normally not the case.

“Overall I think we have had a good weekend, knowing that the pace was not good enough and that we had 40 laps with Vettel behind and one or two seconds quicker than us.”
