Both Mercedes GP cars were subject to punishments following the Hungarian Grand Prix although Team Principal Ross Brawn admits that he does not agree with the 10-place grid drop which Michael Schumacher has received ahead of Belgium.
Mercedes’ first punishment was a fine of 50,000 dollars, handed to the team by Formula 1 governing body the FIA after the right-rear wheel of Nico Rosberg dangerously flew off his car due to it not being fitted properly in the pits; in the process, the flying object knocked down Williams mechanic Nigel Hope, who fortunately avoided major injury.
Also after the race, Schumacher was given the Spa penalty after squeezing former team-mate Rubens Barrichello’s Williams towards the pit wall whilst duelling for tenth position and one point on the 66th lap of the 70-lap event.
“We will have a thorough investigation into the incident and report our conclusions to the FIA,” Brawn began of the moment which ended Rosberg’s afternoon.
“We are thankful that no serious harm was caused by the stray wheel and send our best wishes to the Williams mechanic who was unfortunately injured.
“Michael and Rubens had a tough battle in the closing laps which the stewards ultimately felt was too tough.
“We don't necessarily agree with their decision but we do accept the penalty. It's been a tough weekend but we will go away, lick our wounds and come back stronger at the next few races.”
Further post-race feelings from Mercedes:
- Rosberg: I was more concerned about the tyre!
- Mercedes apologise to Williams for lost wheel incident
- Barrichello and Schumacher share opinions
