Schumacher ‘sorry’ after Barrichello push

2 August 2010

Michael Schumacher has issued an apology to former team-mate Rubens Barrichello following his forceful move on the Brazilian in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Furthermore, the 7-time World Champion admits that the FIA race stewards were correct in handing him a 10-place grid drop penalty ahead of Belgium.

With Barrichello’s Williams having made a late-race pit-stop, the former Ferrari team partner of Schumacher challenged the Mercedes on the run to Turn 1 as the 66th lap of 70 began, with the German then forcing his car towards the pit wall and risking a large accident in the process.

Initially, both men disagreed with each others’ opinion but, having watched the moment back on Monday, Schumacher has issued the following message via the German version of his personal website:

“Yesterday, right after the race, I was still in the heat of the action, but now I’ve watched the moment with Rubens again I must say that the stewards are right with their assessment.

“The manoeuvre against him was too hard. I certainly wanted to make it hard for him to pass and I also clearly showed him that I did not want to give up the inside line, but I didn’t wish to put him in any danger with my manoeuvre.

“If he feels that I did, then I’m sorry because that was not my intention.”
