Hungarian Grand Prix winner Mark Webber has explained that rival teams will continue to ridicule Red Bull Racing as long as the Milton Keynes-built cars remain the fastest on the grid, with Sebastian Vettel’s Saturday pole position time having been a massive 1.2 seconds quicker than its nearest challenger.
With Vettel on pole from Webber at the Hungaroring, Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari lined up third on the grid with the nearest McLaren of Lewis Hamilton fifth, 1.6 off pole; and it was McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh who mostly raised his views over supposedly illegal flexible front wings on the Red Bull and Ferrari cars.
“The car has always been passed as legal by (F1 governing body) the FIA,” Webber said following Sunday’s race. “When people don't like what they see on the stopwatch, they sometimes seem to have to justify their own positions.
“Our guys have broken their balls to design a car in the spirit of the regulations but, when there's pressure on (other) people to perform but they're getting destroyed, that's how it is.
“Some teams have done certain things and other teams have done others; McLaren incorporated the f-duct, for example, which is a sensational idea which we've turned the world upside down to try and achieve, but not without resource difficulties…but that's Formula 1.
“We're more than happy with what we have on our car and we're sleeping well at night. You should never penalise things which are ingenious or people who are doing a good job, but there's always something new to bring out of the cupboard.”
