‘Sleeping policemen’-like speed ramps - the like of which can also be seen in Barcelona, Valencia and Monza - have been added to what is now a tarmac run-off area at Spa’s Les Combes corner. Changes have also been made at La Source in order to prevent drivers from wandering from the boundaries of the race track this year.
Last year’s Belgian Grand Prix may have seen all cars survive the tight La Source hairpin at the start of the race although the Safety Car was then deployed as a four-car pile-up took out championship leader Jenson Button, then title holder Lewis Hamilton, Jaime Alguersuari and Romain Grosjean at the Les Combes chicane.
However, for the 2010 race the section’s grass and gravel run-off areas have been replaced with asphalt and three bumps have now been installed to prevent competitors from cutting the corner without sustaining car damage.
Also at Les Combes, the outside of its left-hander now features a 50 millimetre-wide negative kerb, with artificial grass laid behind it. AstroTurf has also been installed behind the apex rumble strip of the same corner.
Elsewhere on the lap, first corner La Source features extended AstroTurf to the end of the run-off area in order to prevent cars – such as race winner Kimi Räikkönen last year – from intentionally using a wider line than usual.
