Ecclestone: Schumacher would be Champion with Red Bull

25 August 2010

Formula 1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone is confident that, had he been competing with Red Bull Racing this year, returning multiple Champion Michael Schumacher would be a firm favourite for title glory.

Having retired with Ferrari at the end of 2006, Schumacher made his comeback with the new Mercedes works team this season although the German is yet to reach the podium in a car which has proven too hot to handle on the majority of circuits.

However, whilst discussing the year with Schumacher on the official Formula 1 website, Ecclestone expressed his opinions over the driver’s abilities.

“When people say that (team-mate) Nico Rosberg is faster than Michael, I tell them Nico still has to prove himself,” said Bernie. “Not so Michael. For Nico, fourth places are still important - not for Michael.

"Only winning is what counts for him. Whether he finishes fourth or 14th doesn’t really matter for him. If Michael were driving a Red Bull, I would put my money on him.”

Schumacher then responded to the F1 supremo’s comments: “Let’s put it this way; I would have different options in a Red Bull.”

Furthermore, Ecclestone added that he does not believe that former double title winner Fernando Alonso ‘will achieve at Ferrari what Michael did.’
