Spanish engineer Joan Villadelprat, head of the budding Epsilon Euskadi team which hopes for a place on the 2011 starting grid, has denied that serious talks are being held regarding a fusion with current team Hispania Racing.
With an internet rumour having suggested that the two Iberian outfits could be linking up ahead of next year, Villadelprat began by summing up his squad’s current state.
“The FIA already has a full understanding of our project and they must now choose between the three candidates,” he explained to the country’s Diario AS newspaper.
“We have explained our situation, including the financial aspects, making it clear that we are committed to providing the necessary budget, but the deal is not sealed.”
However, when quizzed over the alleged merger discussions with Hispania, Villadelprat replied:
“I don’t know where that ‘information’ has come from. I spoke with (team owner) José Ramón Carabante about a possible collaboration with Epsilon as a technology provider.
“We are a company looking for clients and it’s clear that Hispania is a potential customer for the type of work we do, provided there are no conflicts of interest, but that’s all it was – we never talked about a merger. I’m not closing doors, though; we have never discussed it but the option always exists and we shouldn’t discard it.”
