This year’s finals of the F1 in Schools project will see the teams travel to Singapore City in order to coincide with next month’s nighttime Grand Prix on the streets of Marina Bay. Winners will be treated to, not only the Bernie Ecclestone World Champions trophy, but also an exclusive scholarship with City University London.
The 2010 World Finals will bring together the National Champions from the 18,000 schools of 34 countries worldwide to have taken part in the initiative over the past 12 months. Using CAD/CAM software for designing, building and testing balsa wood-made Formula 1 car models, the projectiles are powered by compressed air.
Representing England will be Dynamic of St. John Payne School in Chelmsford, Essex.
However, they face stiff competition from no less than four other British schools at this stage including all-girls Team Zenith from Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive in Wales, Team Carbon from Newtownards’s Regent House School in Northern Island and the English-Malaysian Team Fusion, which consists of students from Lutterworth College in England and Sekolah Pertukangan Perantis Tentera Darat in the south-east Asian country.
“This ‘experience of a lifetime’ is sure taking a lot of my life time!” laughs Anna MacBride, Resources Manager for Dynamic. “But, hey, it sure is worth it! We get endless fun out of this competition and a whole lot of valuable experiences; knowledge that gives us a big boost on the career ladder, putting us a step ahead of many other people, as well as providing skills and experiences that money can’t buy.
“Or for instance just the other week we were invited to go to a concert at the O2 Arena in aid of the Transformation Trust; we were able to watch performances from the likes of The Wanted to The Saturdays.”
