Mark Webber interview: Fernando’s in a nice position

27 August 2010

Mark Webber admits that fellow championship challenger Fernando Alonso – the only one of five title contenders not facing his team-mate at present – is in a ‘nice position’ ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. However, the Australian also stresses that championship aspirations are still at the back of his mind. The Red Bull driver spoke with gathered journalists, including GPUpdate.net, at Spa.

What are your chances for Spa, Mark?

Red Bull could lose out on the long straights of Spa

You only ever run medium-downforce for a reason and that’s long straights - that obviously hasn’t been one of our strengths this year, and we know why, but we work incredibly hard to make the car stronger in other areas and we can still keep up at those tracks.

We weren’t mega uncompetitive in Montreal but we certainly weren’t the pace-setters. If we had to have 17 races, we wouldn’t choose Spa and Monza…but they’re part of the calendar and we have to make the car quick everywhere.

Is it all damage limitation this weekend, then?

Look, we were s****ing ourselves in Valencia and we won the race there - that was good because last year we were very poor in Valencia, we were blown away. Let's see how the top speeds are here. It will give a bit of an indication for Monza, too.

But you can’t do much at Monza, it's probably the worst race of the year for a car that's quick in the corners.

Would you say Fernando in a stronger position, because Ferrari is supporting him, whereas you and Sebastian (Vettel) are too close together?

It’s a nice position for Fernando to have. It’s nicer if he's following his team-mate, he can have a little bit of relief from that, but if there's a car in between you can't do anything about that.

So it's not a huge amount of support he can get but we saw evidence of that at Hockenheim; that’s a little feather in his cap but whether it’s enough for him to win the championship…it’s hard to say.

Is it nice talking about the possibility of becoming World Champion?

Not really. When it gets closer, maybe, but at the moment it’s too far away. A non-finish and next week this room is empty. You know me, I know you…that’s how the game works.
