Renault’s f-duct device makes its debut in Belgium this weekend, with early signs showing well as Robert Kubica was some six kilometres per hour (3.7mph) quicker than anybody through the Spa speed trap.
As the f-duct allows the luminous cars to run a higher downforce setup for Spa’s corners, with the team knowing the tool will allow straight-line speeds to be made up, the Pole reached as high as second on the afternoon practice timesheets before finishing the day fourth, two tenths down on P1 man Fernando Alonso.
“It was quite a good Friday for us,” said Kubica. “The conditions in first practice were pretty bad but our main aim was to check how the f-duct system was functioning on our car.
“We focused on getting experience of the system, for the engineers and for myself, and to get everything working properly - and we managed to do this in spite of running in the wet.
“In the second session, I ran every type of tyre: extremes (Wets), Intermediates and both compounds of the Slicks. The car felt reasonable in all conditions but I think we can make further improvements to the balance tomorrow.”
