Schumacher lamenting 10-place grid penalty

27 August 2010

Michael Schumacher admits that the 10-place grid drop he picked up in Hungary will cost him this weekend, especially as the poor weather conditions hindered the amount of setup work which teams were able to complete in practice on Friday.

After squeezing former team-mate Rubens Barrichello’s Williams towards the Hungaroring pit wall just under a month ago, Schumacher was handed the penalty for this weekend’s event at Spa and will therefore set off on Sunday from ten grid slots further back than where he qualifies.

“It's obviously a beautiful feeling to be back on this track, which is still great to drive,” said the Mercedes driver who, as well as making his F1 debut at Spa in 1991 and winning his first race at the track a year later, collected his most recent drivers’ title in Belgium six seasons ago.

“It's also beautiful because I have a lot of good memories linked to Spa but that doesn't help a great deal with the situation that we are facing here and having a 10-place penalty makes it difficult to go into the weekend with big hopes for a good result.

“The weather might help a little, by mixing up the field, and so I hope it doesn’t change too much over the race weekend.”

“It's been a difficult day for us as we’ve been trying to get our revised parts for the car to work,” team-mate Nico Rosberg commented. “The weather conditions have complicated our programme and, whilst we've tried a lot of different things, it's been tough to get any consistent feedback - I've suffered with understeer all day and really struggled with the balance on the Wet tyres.”
