Webber sets pace in final practice at Spa

28 August 2010

Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber was quickest in final practice this morning at Spa-Francorchamps ahead of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Webber set the pace around the halfway through the one-hour session, his best lap a 1 minute 46.106 seconds, 0.117 seconds up on Lewis Hamilton, who was second for McLaren.

In contrast to Friday, conditions were drier for FP3 and they remained that way until the final 20 minutes, when a heavy rain shower hit the track. Consequently no one improved in the last quarter, although a few did opt to go out to get a feel for the conditions.

Sebastian Vettel meanwhile was third, on a 1m 46.396s, as Red Bull bounced back from a rather mediocre start yesterday, followed by reigning World Champion Jenson Button and then the Renault of Robert Kubica. Kubica was again strong and should easily make it through to the top-ten shootout later on.

Friday pace-setter, Fernando Alonso could only manage sixth, just in front of his Ferrari team-mate, Felipe Massa, more than half a second further back.

Force India’s Adrian Sutil, Williams man Nico Hülkenberg and Kamui Kobayashi’s Sauber rounded out the top ten, the latter in front of the sister car of Pedro de la Rosa.

Further down the order, Vitaly Petrov and Rubens Barrichello took P12 and P13, while Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg were off the pace again in their Mercedes GP cars as they had been in FP1 and FP2.

Toro Rosso’s Sébastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari filled positions 16th and 17th, with Force India’s Vitantonio Liuzzi 18th, having missed the first 35 minutes of the session while his mechanics worked on his car. In the end he did just 8 laps. Sutil managed almost double that in the sister car.

Jarno Trulli was the top new team runner for Lotus, followed by Bruno Senna’s Hispania and the other T127 of Heikki Kovalainen. Virgin’s Lucas di Grassi and Timo Glock came in 22nd and 23rd, with Sakon Yamamoto slowest on a 1m 52.001s, three tenths off Glock and 5.8 seconds off the ultimate pace.
