Belgian Grand Prix pole-sitter Mark Webber does not believe that he is subject to any more pressure than usual heading into this weekend’s race at Spa.
Having set a 1:45.778 lap time before a late rain shower cemented the top spot, despite a late challenge from the McLaren drivers, the Australian stayed in front on a circuit at which Red Bull had feared could be tough to master, due to their straight-line speed disadvantage which was not as highlighted in today’s conditions.
“Not really, I don’t see it as just seven races to go,” Webber, who turned 34 on Friday, said in the post-qualifying press conference. “If we were sitting in Brazil, then of course it would be a bit more intense, but we’ve got a lot of races to go yet.”
Mark added that he is particularly delighted with his Spa grid position and sixth career pole: “It’s a special place to get pole position at; it’s a beautiful circuit, all the drivers love driving here, so I’m going to go and enjoy the race tomorrow and do my best.”
