Robert Kubica may have been demoted to third from second place by Lewis Hamilton in the final moments of Q3 qualifying at Spa although the confident Pole has reminded onlookers that Renault has been on the pace all weekend so far.
Carrying a rear wing-stalling f-duct for the first time this season, Renault are now able to increase downforce amounts for corners with the knowledge that the tool will then make up more speed on straight sections of track.
“It’s been a good qualifying for us; we have been quite competitive in all conditions, both when the track was drying up and in mixed conditions,” Kubica said in the post-qualifying press conference.
“We had a bit of a bad moment in Q3, when the car just stopped running approaching the last corner on the in-lap, so we knew we’d not be able to do a second attempt in Q3 because there was no time.
“I was then just the praying for rain, and there were actually some drops, but not enough as Lewis still managed to get up there (in front), but it’s still good for us.
“After coming back and introducing the f-duct quite late, it’s worked perfectly from the first lap yesterday, so we’re happy to be here.”
Robert now remains open-minded heading into Sunday’s race. “Anything can happen, we’ve seen different conditions here,” he began to sum up. “What’s important is that we’ve been in the top five in all conditions, so I think Red Bull is out of our reach and McLaren is also very fast here but we’ll try our best.”
