Petrov had targeted top ten grid slot

28 August 2010

While Renault team-mate Robert Kubica sets off from third place in Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix, Vitaly Petrov will start from the tail-end of the grid after committing an unforced error and spinning off the track in Q1 qualifying.

With all drivers rushing to post a lap time as the threat of rain intensified at the start of qualifying, Petrov’s slip-up prompted an early red flag period.

“It was a very disappointing session for me today,” the Russian began to explain. “On my out-lap on Slick tyres, I went onto the kerb at the exit of Turn 9 (Liège) and lost control of the car because of the standing water.

“I wasn’t able to get started again, so that was the end of my session. It was a big shame because the car has been very good this weekend and I was aiming for a place in the top ten.

“But now this has happened, all I can do is focus on tomorrow and stay positive. The (new) f-duct is working very well, so we are quick on the straights and will be able to overtake.

“Plus the weather forecast is uncertain and we know that, when it is wet, everything is possible.”
