Felipe Massa is the highest-placed Ferrari on the Spa starting grid, after team-mate Fernando Alonso made a mistake and sunk to tenth on Saturday, although the Brazilian appears to be slightly more apprehensive than the Spaniard heading into the race.
With slight rain having slowed most drivers’ progress in Q3, Alonso’s first-lap mistake combined with the inability to improve on the second run, leaving the championship contender on the back half of Row 5.
“Obviously, I can’t be pleased with this result but it has to be said that, if there is one track where grid position is less critical than others, then it is this one,” the former double title winner began.
“We will have to be clever and make the most of every opportunity.”
“Definitely a difficult qualifying,” Massa added. “Already this morning we had seen that the McLarens and Red Bulls were quicker than us and they confirmed that this afternoon when we had a few difficulties, failing to get the result we were expecting, which means we will be trying to improve our positions tomorrow in the race.”
