Rubens Barrichello has apologised to his team for the incident involving himself and Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari on the opening lap of the Belgian Grand Prix, ending the Brazilian’s 300th Formula 1 race prematurely.
With many celebrations having marked a significant weekend for Barrichello, the Williams man misjudged his braking point and removed his left-front wheel at the end of Lap 1. Amazingly, Alonso was able to continue.
“It was very, very difficult to know that it was wet, so when I touched the brakes the car went straight and I went straight into Alonso,” Rubens explained to reports in the Spa paddock.
“I’m very sorry for the team, we’d prepared such a nice party. I was closing the door on Nico Rosberg and, even though I touched the brakes early, it was not enough to stop the car.”
