Sebastian Vettel has apologised after side-swiping Jenson Button’s McLaren out of action in the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday. With the pair having been running in second and third positions, the German lost control of his Red Bull under braking for the Bus Stop Chicane on Lap 17 of 44.
After starting fourth with Button fifth, Vettel lost ground at the start but moved into third place by overtaking the Renault of Robert Kubica at La Source on the Lap 4 restart. Having then closed in on Button, the German was caught out.
“First of all, I'm sorry,” Sebastian explained to reporters in the Spa paddock. “Obviously it wasn’t my intention to destroy his race or mine but I was close and I was faster than him.
“I tried to out-brake him on the outside but when I changed from the inside to the outside I lost the car under braking, on the bump, and I couldn't really control it anymore and unfortunately crashed into him.”
Furthermore, the German laments remaining on full wet-weather tyres while others were on Intermediates as the track dried up in the closing stages of the race.
