McLaren’s Ron Dennis has told GPUpdate.net that Sebastian Vettel should first consider his own actions, should he fail to pick up the drivers’ world title this year. The German failed to score at Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix in a race which featured a Bus Stop Chicane collision which removed Jenson Button from proceedings.
Formerly McLaren Team Principal until Martin Whitmarsh took over for the start of the 2009 season, Dennis is now the head of McLaren Automotive but was pleased to witness Lewis Hamilton’s victory first-hand at Spa. However, as he explained in the paddock, Ron was less impressed with Vettel’s driving standards.
“I think that it’s easy to say it’s a racing incident, that’s the simple answer,” the 63-year-old told GPUpdate.net, with FIA race stewards having handed the Red Bull man a drive-through penalty for the coming-together.
“It seems Sebastian is just too impetuous; look at the incident with his own team-mate, look at incidents that put him out of the race. It’s good to push, it’s good to be competitive, but there are so many historical lines in motorsport and the one that fits him more than anything is, 'To finish first, first you have to finish.’
“You have to understand that, whatever the outcome, if he doesn’t win this year’s World Championship and he's considering the reasons why, I think he should first consider his own actions.
“It’s one thing to put yourself out of the race but it’s another to take out either your team-mate or a member of another team - it was a completely avoidable accident and he was lucky to get away with a drive-through.”
