Hamilton insists: F1 title race still open

30 August 2010

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton has rejected suggestions it is now a two-horse race in the battle for the 2010 F1 drivers’ title.

Hamilton re-took the initiative following his superb win in the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday and now lies three points up on Mark Webber, who was second. However, with the other main title contenders - namely Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso all failing to score at Spa-Francorchamps, the top two have now pulled out a good lead.

Indeed Hamilton is 31 points up on Vettel in third, the equivalent to more than a race win - 25 points - under the new points system for 2010.

Despite that though, Hamilton knows only too well how things can turn around and with six races to go he isn’t getting carried away.

“You’ve seen in the last few races how quickly things can change, so we will still have a long way to go,” Hamilton said. “There are still many points to be grabbed by any of the drivers who are fighting for the championship.

“Clearly for me, my closest rival in the championship is Mark in terms of points, but I still think the championship is open, but obviously we want to make sure that that’s not the case after another few races.”

Hamilton also added that it is too early to expect his team-mate to play the support role, even though he has 35 points more than his fellow countryman.

“I don’t think so,” he added, when asked if McLaren should concentrate their efforts more on him now. “I think Jenson was just very unfortunate today.

“I get the same treatment as Jenson and vice versa and that enables us both to score maximum points and so I don’t feel there should be any preferential treatment. Obviously the team do the best they can possibly do, to the maximum for each of us. There’s no more they could do.”
