Mark Webber reckons Red Bull Racing is not too ‘far away’ now from having to adopt a new strategy as he bids to land the 2010 F1 drivers’ title.
Webber may have lost the lead in the drivers’ championship following Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix, but his runners-up spot keeps him well in contention. Indeed he will go to Monza in two weeks time just three points behind McLaren man, Lewis Hamilton and crucially he is now 28-points up on his team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who had a dismal afternoon and eventually finished in P15.
Speaking after the race, Webber said that while he doesn’t expect Red Bull Racing to focus on him yet, he did speculate the squad might have to take a different approach to McLaren.
“McLaren have won many championships, so they have a pretty good trophy cabinet. Red Bull has a good trophy cabinet too,” he explained, “but not one like McLarens. It depends on how hungry we are to try and do that.
“I think it’s too early, at the moment, but having said that maybe there is a different strategy compared to McLaren. I’m not sure. It’s still too early at the moment, but not far away, I would say.”
Webber's focus now shifts to the Italian Grand Prix on September 12 and he is optimistic about his prospects: “We’re looking forward to Monza to see how we might go around there. We learned a bit in the race today to go forward in that event as well. [Overall] I’m happy with today’s result, after the start I had. Sensational points, for myself,” he concluded.
