Fourth a positive result, says Massa

30 August 2010

Felipe Massa was delighted with fourth place in the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday at Spa-Francorchamps and he freely admitted that not only was he a bit lucky to take P4, but also that Red Bull and McLaren were ‘stronger’.

Massa was the top Ferrari driver at the finish, after Fernando Alonso spun out, and while that was no doubt a bonus for the Brazilian, especially as it allows him to close up a bit in the drivers’ championship, he knows he still has a long way to go - 32 points, more than a race win - to get back on terms with the two-time World Champion.

“I think this is a positive result and, given the way the race went and the accidents that put [Sebastian] Vettel and [Jenson] Button out of the game, we can even say we were a bit lucky,” Massa conceded.

“This weekend, Red Bull and McLaren were stronger than us, but we worked well as a team, making the right choices before and during the race. Our set-up was a bit more efficient in the dry, while we suffered a bit in the wet, especially in the middle sector, while in the first two we were reasonably competitive.”

F1 now goes to Italy in two weeks time and the Scuderia will be under pressure there to perform in front of the tifosi. Massa has promised though that they will keep on pushing to re-discover the kind of form they had in Germany and Hungary.

“We go to Monza next, for our home race: we hope to do well at a track where speed and stability under braking count for a lot.

“We will continue to fight right to the end, even if the situation in the championship is ever more compromised.”
